MaryLou Wakefield is a contemporary abstract artist whose work is inspired by the power and mystery of the natural world, and the imagery summoned in prose, poetry and song lyrics. MaryLou’s work is an exploration of the underlying, the hidden, that which cannot easily be described with words.

Fundamental to her visual storytelling is her use of original marks and gestural writing. While at times her text is visible, at other times one can only catch a glimpse of writing that has been obscured or veiled much like an unspoken or hidden narrative. In this way MaryLou plays with adding texture and another layer of meaning to her work.
